What Are Differences Between Power BI And MSBI

Power BI and MSBI are both BI tools. MSBI is a Microsoft product with ETL capabilities. ETL capabilities include extraction , transformation and loading of data. It has multidimensional data organizing and visualization ability. Three subcomponents of MSBI are SQL server integration services (SSIS), SQL server analytics service (SSAS) and SQL server reporting service (SSRS). SSRS is data visualization and reporting layer of MSBI and allows creating dashboards and reports for MSBI. Only SSRS can be compared with Power BI because Power BI was developed with the objective to improve service capability of SSRS which is only one of many services of MSBI.

SQL Server reporting service (SSRS)

This is BI service for data analysis and generating reports on the server based data. It was developed by Microsoft way back in 2004. This is a comprehensive and extensible reporting platform which includes programming interfaces and integrated set of processing components. Its use is to design, test and deploy the report.

Power BI

Power BI is also a Microsoft product and was introduced in 2017. This is also a data analysis and reporting tool used for reporting from wide range of traditional and untraditional data sources. Power BI is very simple and extremely user friendly and helps business analysts to work easily on it. Power BI is very useful for complex and huge data analysis and is widely used for structuring and modeling of unshaped data.

MSBI VS Power BI

 ·         SSRS is used only for server based reports while Power BI is used for cloud based reports too. Use of cloud platform in case of Power BI is very useful for users. Data loss can be avoided by use of cloud platform. Cloud computing uses remote recourses and saves money on servers and other equipments. Users only have to pay for resources they use. As server based reports are safer so some users prefer MSBI despite many shortcomings. 

 ·         Power BI can be used with desktop, web and mobile app. While SSRS can be used with Desktop and web.

 ·         Power BI costs considerably less.

 ·         Power BI has lot of graphical component as compared to SSRS and user experience is far better in case of power BI. Power BI is far easier to use.
